Why are some chicken eggs dirty?

The honest answer is that eggs come from chickens and chickens like to dig in dirt and have dust baths. Typically the eggs are laid and another hen will come in after digging or taking a bath to lay. When the chicken goes to sit on top of the eggs that are currently in the nest they tend to move them around causing dirt from the chicken to get onto the eggs.
