Why are eggs different colors?

It depends on the breed of the chicken. For example my Easter Eggers lay blue/green eggs while my Rhode Island Red lays brown eggs. The colors can very slightly depending on diet and environmental factors but this would not be a big change. Typically the only change in color is a slightly lighter or darker shade.
